Charles Onwude
Non-Executive Director, representing Stanbic IBTC/Standard Chartered Bank
Mr. Charles Onwude was appointed to the Board of Stanbic IBTC Stockbrokers Limited on 15 September 2022. He is a seasoned credit risk professional with over 25 years of banking experience, bringing deep expertise in credit risk management and audit. Mr. Onwude holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree and a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Economics from the University of Lagos, Nigeria, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria. He has further strengthened his leadership exposure through executive management programmes at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, Chicago, and INSEAD’s online executive programmes. He currently serves as the Chief Risk Officer at Stanbic IBTC Bank Limited, having previously held the role of Head, Risk & Corporate Affairs, where he led the development and implementation of the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework and provided oversight of the bank’s risk and control environment. In this capacity, he championed the embedding of sound risk management practices and the maturation of risk culture across Stanbic IBTC. Prior to his appointment as Country Head of Risk, Mr. Onwude held several key positions, including Head, Personal & Business Banking Credit and Head, Business and Commercial Client Credit, where he oversaw the entire credit operation in Nigeria and chaired the PBB Credit Committee responsible for reviewing and approving credit applications. Mr. Onwude began his banking career as a Relationship Officer at Universal Trust Bank (now Union Bank), progressing to the position of Credit Analyst before joining First City Monument Bank Plc, where he rose to Senior Credit Officer during an 11-year tenure. Before entering the banking sector, he served as a Credit Controller with GBO/MDS, a division of UACN Plc. He currently serves as a Non-Executive Director on the Boards of Stanbic IBTC Stockbrokers Limited and Stanbic IBTC Ventures Limited
